How to read Guitar Music

By Mrs Nikki Delgado

This is a question I get asked alot especially from beginner players. So I decided to write an article and give you my best advice on how to read guitar sheet music.

I found that the very best way to first learn the basic relationship between notes on the stave and notes on the fretboard was to read or play directly from a very simple beginners piece of sheet music. It's slow at first but you very quickly get to know the notes on the stave. It takes a little bit longer to learn the notes above and below the stave on those lines called ledger lines.
Start with a single line of notes and then move on to simple pieces with 2 voices - melody line and bass line, and then you get to hear the basic harmonies this makes and it's great to hear the difference. Very basic (and a bit slow at first) but still great. At first you may have to work out each note using the Every Good Boy Deserves Fruit for the lines and F A C E for the spaces but it's not too difficult, you just have to do it to learn it.
I always encourage people to keep practicing as this is the only way you are going to get better. I know it can be frustrating at the beginning but KEEP GOING! It will be worth it in the end trust me.
Just remember its like learning a language there is no easy way to learn it.
One of the best ways is to say the notes as you play them. This way they get into your head. It may be slow at first but this will get faster.
If you have any experience learning piano this will help alot. Its a great base for learning the guitar if you can already read piano music. Its also helpful if you have a piano handy so that you can practice the notes on there before practicing on your guitar.
Try sight singing. Read the notes without your guitar.
Get a tutor or a friend to help you. Get someone to practice with this can be a great help. Take lessons with a friend and then practice together.
Do 30 minutes practice a day EVERYDAY! Donґt skip a day! This is the best way to learn I know I keep on saying it but it works trust me.
